What is a patent?
A patent is an exclusive right of an owner to exclude others
from making, using, or selling the patented invention without
permission, during the life of the patent.
Why do you need a patent?
The University highly values the generation of
inventions and their protection. A patent allows its owner to
fully exploit the commercial potential of the invention. As an
inventor you can share the benefit from the royalties associated
with a licensed patent.
So is your idea
patentable?
An "untested idea"
can be represented by as little as a pencil sketch.
Unfortunately, despite what you may have heard, there is no
effective way to protect an idea through intellectual property
law.
That does not mean that you should give up when you only have an
idea. Perform research to develop your novel idea into
a workable invention (take your idea through the
"proof-of-principle" i.e., prove that the new system or
mechanism you may have developed works).
What is the eligibility criteria
of your invention for the patent protection?
Three legal requirements for the
Invention to be eligible for patent protection:
Novelty:
your invention must be new, not publicly known.
Non-Obviousness: your invention has
to be non-obvious to someone who is “skilled in the art”.
Utility: your invention must have a
useful purpose.
Who will be the owner of your
patent?
KFUPM will be the Assignee (owner) for the patent, and it will
bear all the expenditure incurred for processing the patent
application till the end.
