KFUPM Faculty & Researchers are involved as inventors in 45 issued patents. These patents span the period from the year 1994 to year 2009. There are 19 U.S. patents under sole ownership, and 1 U.S., 5 Japanese and 1 World patent under joint ownership. The KFUPM patent portfolio covers the following technological areas: Instrumentation Control & Devices, Petrochemical, Oil & Gas, Nano, Local Problems.

Apart from these, KFUPM currently has 170 patents under process, which includes 94 filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and 1 in Japan Patent Office (JPO).
